According to the Alabama Latino Association, Latino population increased 247 % in the last decade. Many Hispanics in the Wiregrass area are active with jobs in construction, food service, and agriculture.

The Wiregrass area is home to about 50,000 Latinos and the numbers are on the rise.

Some Hispanic residents need help obtaining banking privileges.

"one of the things that is happening within the Latino community is that its now a 700 billion dollar industry and its slated to be a 1 trillion dollar industry by 2010" said
Rich Lopez with Richco Consulting Service

As the Latino community continues to grow, the entire Wiregrass area is benefiting. In Dothan alone, there are 12 Latino restaurants, 5 stores, and 4 churches.

"Our people are getting settled, living here for 10 years eligible for banking, to buy homes..." says Lopez.

Banking is just one thing that some Latinos need assistance with, especially those who are working on their citizenship.

The IRS offers a tax ID number to those who don't have a Social Security number so they can open up checking or savings accounts.

"I understand that some people feel people are illegal, but you can't necessarily judge that by the color of someone's skin and I think in Alabama, we've seen that before," said Shay Farley with AL Applied Center for Law and Justice

As Hispanics appreciate their native language, they also respect the English language. English as a Second Language classes are filling up rapidly in the Wiregrass and even churches are creating programs to help teach Latinos.

As Latinos continue to settle down in the Wiregrass and raise families, their children are having an impact as well. More than 20 Hispanics are graduating from local colleges with plans to enter the healthcare field alone.

For those who are a part of the Latino community who need professional or financial direction, you can call Richco Consulting Service at 793-2626.

IF SPEEDING IS BREAKING THE LAW AND I AM EXPECTED TO PAY THE PRICE, THEN BEING HERE ILLEGALLY IS ALSO BREAKING THE LAW. I WOULD BE EXPECTED TO PAY THE TICKET AND IF I DIDNT DOTHAN POLICE WILL COME LOOKING FOR ME. WELL GO LOOKING FOR THEM STARTING AT SAUNDERS ROAD. I HEAR ALL THE TIME OF MURDERS BY ILLEGALS, SO THEY ARE NOT ALL HERE TO DO GOOD. I AM TIRED OF BEING TOLD THAT.

In response to leah, everytime you see an illegal at walmart, buying gas etc they are paying taxes, they do pay fed tax and ssn most of the time on a fake ssn number..where does that money go. Why do we have to put them in our backyard and give them our bank account. They rent and some have bank accounts or credit cards. Uninsured drivers, across the board their are uninsured motorist of every race, creed and color. To concerned, since the problem of immigration has been going on so long, who do we blame, not the politicians, we must accept the blame for this. Everytime they come up for election, is the time we can FIRE them and get someone to do the job correctly. Let's not blame the illegals who are trying for a better life, let us take the blame for being complacent,by not voting, not raising our voices to be heard. It is time we as American citizens stand up and make our elected officials work for us and not the elite few who control them and their actions..One word...VOTE!!!!!

If i have to abide by the law...so should everyone else. In the United States, ENGLISH should be the primary language.! And it is not. We let ALL people who can't speak english take a drivers license test in their language...but how many road signs are in any other laguage but english? NONE and that is the number we should go for. If you can't speak the native language, we can't help...they treat Americans the same way in their country too. Im for the good of all, but Im going to help me first and I would hope our government would jump on that instead of HELPING LEGALIZE ILLEGALS..when you won't help US...yep ELECTIONS R COMIN!!!!!!

They are also responsible for crime in this area. Just look at the trailer parks around dothan, especially Saunders Road. This area is not in the city limits and the Sheriffs' Deparment is out there on a regular basis. The owner does not care that they are illegal and how many live in one trailer. MONEY! That is all he wants. When these people decide to come here the LEGAL way and go through the process AND learn to speak the English language my opinion may change.

I agree with Leah,If they are here Legally and are adding to the betterment of our country then I welcome them. However our politicians at all levels especially the federal level have ignored this problem for decades. It seems most Americans welcome Immigrants that come to our nation and follow the procedures set forth by our laws,But politicians continue to look the other way on this issue once again assuring the American citizen that "They Don't Care About US or What We want to Happen in Our Country" Election is coming soon Will we have a Choice of someone that will represent the Citizens for a Change? Or NOT!!!

If they are "illegal" then I do NOT believe in helping them settle! You want them "settled" then put them in your own back yard and let em' have your bank account! They are working under the table and avoiding taxes as it is, not paying for auto insurance, no health insurance -- who is paying that? WE ARE!
