Though the number of deaths due to breast cancer has decreased over the years, many women who are at high risk can now get genetic testing for the disease.
Genetic testing for breast cancer is conducted through a blood test, which is found to be very accurate.
The test is offered only to those high risk women who have a strong family history of the disease, among other factors. If you take the test, and it's positive: doctors say you have five main options, which include taking medications such as tamoxifen that reduce your risk. Have surgery to remove your breasts. Have surgery to remove your ovaries. Or, you can participate in a clinical trial or receive close surveillance from your physician.
For more information on genetic testing for breast cancer, you are advised to speak with your doctor.
