A federal judge said Gov. Bob Riley has until Friday to present a plan for relieving overcrowding at Tutwiler Women's Prison in Wetumpka.

Riley said his administration wants to combat prison overcrowding by hiring more parole officers and possibly housing some inmates in other states.

Riley said he wants to hire about 29 parole officers in order to increase the number of paroles.

They will first concentrate on Tutwiler Prison at Wetumpka, then work on other prisons in the state. The governor said his administration is also looking at Louisiana and possibly other states for housing Alabama inmates.

Former Gov. Don Siegelman also looked at housing Alabama inmates in other states, but the idea was rejected because of the cost.
