Treating prisoners with HIV is a concern at the Houston County Jail.

Sheriff Andy Hughes asked the Houston County Commission to transfer more than $27,000 from other areas of the jail budget to the pharmacy supply account.

The funds will be used to prescribe and administer HIV medications to infected prisoners.

The jail averages between four and seven inmates at a time who are infected with the deadly virus.

Last year, the jail spent over $42,000 to treat infected prisoners.

A 28 day supply of HIV medications costs the jail between $370 and $1,200 per month.

Are these inmates with HIV separated from the others so that Houston County does not pay for the disease spreading out among the whole Jail population??

What's wrong with them paying for their meds themselves? I have several health problems and no insurance, so if I get locked up, the County Jail will pay my drug bills? Mmmmm, sounds like a good deal to me.
