Some residents in one Wiregrass county fear for their safety, after a sheriff's office K-9 mauls two Pomeranians.

While neighbors say they want the dog gone, authorities say he poses no threat to the community.

Wednesday afternoon brought heartache to Abbeville Resident Steve Owens and his wife.

They found their beloved family pets, mauled to death.

"She had the dogs out using the bathroom,” Steve Owens said. “She left to go back into the house; and, after [she came] back out to get the dogs in, she went from door to door trying to find the puppies."

Owens says the Henry County Sheriff's Office K-9 Koda lives just one house away and attacked his Pomeranians.

The two dogs were found here in the driveway of where the K-9 is, but the debatable question is how they got there.

"My wife saw him behind Spector Care in the field,” Owens said. “The dog, when she went looking for him and our dogs, go beside our fence there to use the bathroom. We don't know if he got the puppy and went over and the daddy dog was trying to protect him."

Henry Co. Sheriff's Dept. Sheriff Will Maddox said, "It's not all our fault because the dogs did wander over into the K-9 officer’s yard."

Sheriff Maddox says Koda is trained to sniff out drugs and is not an attack dog.

He also says he is well-behaved and does not have a vicious nature. "Anyone can pet this dog, this dog is very docile," he added.

However, others in the neighborhood feel differently, saying they want the dog out of their community.

Neighbor Charolette Barron said, "I'm very uncomfortable. I have a 12 year old child who was very attached to these animals and if he had been home, he would have went over there to get the dogs and he could have gotten hurt."

Sheriff Maddox says Koda has never attacked a human or another animal before.

But, that doesn't ease the minds of the Owens’.

"Our concern here in the community, the safety of our youngens’, which the puppies were my youngins’, my wife's; it's you know, you can replace them, but that's still not replacing your family members," Owens concluded.

No action is being taken with the K-9.

Sheriff Maddox says he will personally pay for the Owens’ dogs and says he feels terrible about their loss.

Mrs109, how can a citizen be jealous about making cases tHOugh they are not in Law Enforcement? Get your facts straight before you make a posting. And obviously she dosen't read the paper! there is a difference in grant and seized money!

Posted by: caring Location: ga. on Aug 7, 2008 at 05:03 PM
these dogs are very dangerous and there and the dogs keepers are careless because having a badge often means they are above the law

Posted by: Mrs109 Location: Apd on Aug 7, 2008 at 09:46 AM
To anonymous(aka pink): Since you do read the paper - you failed to mention the write ups (and photos) of the drugs taken from the streets thanks to K9 Megara and her handler. Grant - seized drug money - what difference does it make? Abbeville is doing a great job. I can understand the jealousy though really..grow up and make a few cases - you might get a tahoe to.

abbeville's k-9 MEG has never escaped or attecked anyone that's because her fence is regulated, not 3 feet tall. and the last time i checked, koda has not made any drug cases, he just got hear cause every dog they get has to go back, it has been through two handlers in the short time he's been here and if it was my dogs he killed, i would have killed its black butt! i think it's the sheriff's responsibility to pay for the dogs, no matter whose yard they were in, you don't put a k-9 scruffy dog in a 3 foot fence and expect it not to jump it, there are kids in the neighborhood

Funny that a statement in the paper from the mayor stated to the citizens of Abbeville that the the Tahoe was purchased with a grant that was obtained by the city! Wonder who is lying, Mrs109 or the mayor?

Abbeville hasn't made any drug cases? Funny..Abbeville just purchased a 2008 Police Chevy Tahoe with seized drug money for K9 use -and a brand new crown vic - not to mention the amount of drugs that have been taken off of the streets. Keep up the good work APD!

So K9 handler, you say that your dog has escaped from the pen while under your control, so just how many times has that been in the last eight years? Nothing to worry about? Yeah right!! Nice try buddy, but a dual purpose drug dog on the loose IS something to worry about!! And your word is nothing to anybody!! Remember that when your dog attacks someone in the neighborhood!

Posted by: 109 on Aug 6, 2008 at 11:04 AM
No wonder that Abbeville hasn’t made any drug cases in the last few years the dog is past his prime.

Posted by: christy Location: shorterville on Aug 6, 2008 at 10:51 AM
Just get over it already. Everyone has their own story about what happened, even the people that were so called there. If my personal pet were to be in someone elses yard and get killed by their dog who was just protecting its territory then I would just have to live with that. I am responsible as the owner to know where my pet is at all times and would never let her out unattended. You can't bring the dogs back and the K-9 isnt going anywhere. So just let it go!

To the individual in Riverview there is nothing to worry about with Abbevilles K9. Abbevilles K9 is in a 6 foot high fence on top of concrete pad so it can't dig out. The gate is locked at all times while she is in it. The other times she is with me in my patrol vehicle. To date which has been 8 years she has escaped from my pen while she has been under my control. My K9 is in the type pen needed for a dog with the type of training she has. I give you my word there is no reason to be afraid.

I was there. The frantic neighbor tried to call me. my phone had been hit by lighting. so all I heard was the answering machine pick up with her frantic calls for help. When I ran over to where she was,the responding officers were arriving. I asisted the on duty officer to get him on his leash. The K-9 dog tried to come at us a couple of times. The officer got him under control and put him in the chain link fence. While walking around to the gated fence, I observed the kennel laying up beside the house. The deputy had been living at this residence for several weeks. The deputy was out of town for the day leaving the K-9 dog unatended. For them to say this was a dog fight. It is a ridiculous statement. These small dogs were not more than six lbs together in weight. I know because I have looked after them on several occasions while neighbors were out of town. The dogs never went further than the house property other than mine. This dog had been seen out of the fence several times

Last time I checked the Henry County K-9 was doing a great job!! At least when she's compared to your K-9 who has been on the street how long? This story has been blown out of proportion and is nothing more than an accident. The small dogs should have been in their own yard and not in the K-9 Deputy's yard!!

I live in Riverview Forrest which is near lake Eufaula north of Abbeville. I fear that the police dog that is our neighborhood could do the same thing. I feel this dog may also be a threat to the community I am told that dog is very aggressive.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 4, 2008 at 02:18 PM
Since this is such a good working dog why hasn't he made any drug arrest. I believe this is the 2nd k9 that henry county has had in the past 3 years and not enough drug cases to count on one hand.

I am shocked.. what is wrong with you people. this police dog has been working for your comunity, he is and has been doing his job . even if the dog was in the worng , ( all dogs involved where wrong ), lets find a solution that will make everybody happy ...and killing the animal will not be a propper solution . this dog is a working member of your comunity... and will continue doing a great job . i am not saying the poms where not ,,, but they also where in a place where they should not have been ... IN THE NEIGHBORS YARD.. SOMETIME THINGS HAPPEN FOR NO REASON ...ITS CALLED ACCIDENTS .. so let get the emotions aside and use brain... to prevent this from happening the officer knows what to do ... as for the neighbors, if you obtain new dogs , you also know what to do.. and killing is not the answer .. leash laws are there for a reason , but these day and age we give everyone a second chance no matter what they did .. just because we talking about dogs ,,, that dont apply to them??

Posted by: kathy on Aug 4, 2008 at 11:34 AM
so its ok for little dogs to roam of the property , because they are cute right ... they can do no damage ... right . well, all dogs should be on the leash or in propper settings.. no matter little big , police dog or not . if all of us humans would keep the animals safe, they would not get killed .( road ways or otherwise).. Im sure there is more to this then we all know..

I have from a very very reliable source that Mrs. Owens was heard the other day poor mouthing the sheriff. The sheriff offered to pay for the dogs out of his own pocket, but he is not God he can not bring them back. A child would not have been harmed in this incident, the children play with the K-9 all the time. The dog would not have attacked the pomeranians if they would have not been in his yard. How do you know the pen is still not fixed have you been trespassing to inspect the pen. Sounds like to me that YOU need to get your facts straight.

Posted by: leigh Location: headland on Aug 3, 2008 at 09:03 PM
To Leah: Dont you think if the pomeranians would have been leashed that this would not have happened either. Both parties were in the wrong because either dog was not leashed. BUT the K-9 got out of his pen unknown to the officer, the pomeranians were let out of the house knowingly without a leash.

PUT THE DOG TU SLEEP.THATS WHAT HAPPENS TU EVERYBODY ELSES DOG. I HAVE A DASHOUND THAT I DONT THINK THIS DOG WOULD OR COULD DO LIKE THIS .

my family has seen this k9 out several times running free several pets have come up missing and mangled over the past month

Posted by: pepper Location: abbeville on Aug 2, 2008 at 10:15 PM
well mr. concerned for k9, i have talked to the owens's and they have not bad mouthed the sheriff. But if a child had been envolved, i guess you would still feel the same way. All Mr. Owens is concerned about, is safty for the community. But if the k9 had been in his his kennel, that is still not fixed properly, the dog would not have attcked the pomeranians. The leash law also applies to the k-9. Why wasn't he on a leash? I think you need to get the facts straight.

Posted by: Jeremy Location: Abbeville on Aug 2, 2008 at 05:40 PM
News 4 has yet to mention that Mr. Owens is a Reserve Police Officer with the Abbeville Police Department and that he should know that you have to keep your animals on your own property. The pomeranians were in the yard of the Officer and the Owens should have kept a better watch on their dogs, since they cared so much about them. When my children are outside I keep a watch over them and do not allow them to wander all over the neighborhood. I have personally been around the K-9 and she has never been anything but doscile. The K-9 is a great asset to Henry Co. and should remain. I think Sheriff Maddox does a great job and that he shouldn't have to pay for the dogs, because the dogs should have been in the Owens' yard, not using the bathroom all over the neighborhood.

Posted by: JENNIFER on Aug 2, 2008 at 10:54 AM
Dogs will be dogs, but I think that Maddox is doing the right thing, and these people should be happy that Abbeville/Henry Co. can afford a drug dog. They need one.

Posted by: Leah Location: malvern on Aug 1, 2008 at 11:11 PM
I think the owner of the K-9 dog should have had him leashed. The dog is so much larger than a pomeranian and I think he should also have to pay for pain and suffereing the two small dogs. I do not know either of these people but I know the size of the pomeranian and a german shepard. The german will win every time!

This dog needs to go. Once it happens, IT WILL eventually happen again.

Posted by: Joshua Location: Geneva County on Aug 1, 2008 at 08:44 PM
You cant keep anyone happy. If the residents dont want police dogs in their neighborhood, all I have to say is "They sale For Sale signs at Walmart everyday."

Posted by: concerned for the k-9 Location: ABBEVILLE on Aug 1, 2008 at 06:24 PM
Nowhere in this article did you state that Abbeville has a leash law! Had these dogs been in a pen they would still be alive. I personally know the K-9 officer and his dog and the dog is VERY docile. The dog has never escaped her pen and must have been provoked by the smaller dogs. The Sheriff offered to pay for the dogs but the Owens Will Not let the issue go they have been bad mouthing the Sheriff since the incident.
