Starting your first year in college can sometimes be stressful in itself. Troy University is making that change a bit less scary for new students.

It is Kendra Coger's first year at Troy University. She says while she was apprehensive about the first year of college, the new Student Success Center is easing her worries.

"You don't have to go all over the place, you know what I'm saying, so I think it's better," said Coger.

This is the first year the university has assembled all of its sources from the first year Student Success Center under one roof.

From tutoring to a career center or student support services, the center offers students a place to come for answers.

Dean of 1st Year Studies, Eleanor Lee, said, "The students would have a kind of one stop shopping, all of the resources that they would need would be available in one building, like an academic mall."

Lee says the services were initially set up to help first and second year students stay in school.

"It's important that we get to the student in the first year so that they will start out with a strong background and if we do that I believe that it would the rest of the years that they are here," says Lee.

That seems to be an all around goal for both Lee and students like Coger.

The first year Student Success Center originally began in 2007, but it’s not until this year that all of the resources are under one roof, which makes it a lot easier for students.

Officials with the school say since the center has opened they have seen a decrease with the amount of students dropping out.
