Residents in a local city are breathing a sigh of relief, along with clean air thanks to a recent grant.

The city of Brundidge is getting rid of some unpleasant smells along with some unpleasant homes.

It may be noisy now, but neighbors in the area are welcoming the sound.

Maggy Doster, a Brundidge resident said, "The smell that's right down from my house is really bad, really bad and I'm glad that they're finally doing something about it."

That smell Doster is speaking of is from one of two problematic drains in the area.

However, thanks to a $400,000 dollar grant through the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs, that smell will go down the drain.

Mayor of Brundidge Jimmy Ramage said, "Over the years, we've paved the town and people build houses; there's more water going into a certain area than used to go in."

Mayor Ramage says the grant will help speed the drain process up.

And, fixing the drain problem isn't the only advantage from the grant.

"In the drainage problem area, there's several dilapidated houses that once we get the drainage repaired and fixed, then we can take down some of these dilapidated houses and make both areas a lot more attractive,” Mayor Ramage added.

In addition, 10 to 12 of the damaged homes will soon be demolished, contributing to the beautification of Brundidge.

"What we're really trying to do is make the area more attractive, for the people that live here,” Mayor Ramage said. “Then hopefully, over time, some of the people will sell that property."

Giving residents like Doster a pleasant place to call home.

Mayor Ramage says the drainage project and home demolition will take a few months to complete.
