These are no ordinary brief cases.

Greg Price, the Chief Technology Officer at Troy University, says, "This kit here is used in forensics in cellular telephones and hand held computing devises. This unit here is a device used for capturing computer data."

Soon there will be more thanks to a $463,000 grant to Troy University. Price says the funding is going to help with equipment, research, and training law enforcement on the new technology.

He also says, "The training initiative is to teach law enforcement how to handle digital evidence and to handle computer crime property."

That's something Sergeant Benny Scarbrough with Troy City Police says is going to be extremely beneficial.

He ads, "Technology is changing everyday from a day-to-day basis so, by that there nature of having individuals train professionals, that's going to know much more about it than law enforcement officers will know, is going to benefit us."

Another change officers are seeing everyday is the increasing amount of cyber crime.

Price says, "It's the hottest thing going on right now in criminal activity, and it's one of the least researched and understood aspect of crime."

Thanks to more equipment and more funding, officials hope to see those numbers decrease. Price says they have been working with law enforcement agencies for about two years now. He says during the first year of the grant, they will concentrate on the training initiative for law enforcement. Students will get the chance to take courses on using the forensics equipment in about a year.

Part of the grant will be used for a student lab. It will hold approximately 50 people at a time for training.
