The financial crisis is causing even traditionally profitable companies and agencies to face staff cuts.
Between the increase in e-mail and decrease in bulk mail, the postal service is in a financial bind.
To save money, the postal service has been shrinking it's work force over the past several years through attrition and early retirement.
It isn't ruling out layoffs in the future.
The recent gas price surge is one example of why money is so tight.
For every penny that gas at the pump goes up, it costs the U.S. Postal Service eight million dollars.
There are two hundred thousand vehicles in it's fleet.

The Postal service is top-heavy with supervisors and managers. Perhaps they should start there with layoffs. Furthermore, the Postal service has been severely mismanaged for many years. The craft employees are micro-managed with an authoritative attitude from management. Management constantly disregards the binding NALC and APWU contracts and ends up paying millions of dollars to settle these disputes.

Working with the Postal Service for as many years as I have, one thing I have noticed is that we are TOP heavy ! The employee's know & understand what do do to get the mail out to the street, there is no sence of having so many Management folks to "watch over" us as they do. It has been noticed that alot of the Managers sit in front of a computer screen and do nothing as it is, those Managers who actually do the job are so over bearing that it causes unnecessary stress to the Clerk/Carrier. If they would reduce the work force by the TOP down, that would save more money in the long run, it will also keep the Supervisors from running into one another as there are to many as it is. As clerk/Carriers, we KNOW what is expected of us and most of us go beyond what is expected, we complete our jobs on a daily basis. The layoffs that are pending will be the WORKERS, the mail still needs to be delivered, managaement won't do it. We are cutting in the wrong area.
