Over 6,500 Alabamians still do not have either their tax refund or stimulus checks.
Those checks total over $4.5 million that aren't going to Alabama taxpayers.
It's not because they don't qualify.
"What typically happens is people move and they don't leave a forwarding address. Sometimes, it's hard to read an address on a tax return filed. The check ends up going to the wrong address, and it's returned by the postal service as undeliverable," says Dan Boone, IRS Spokesman.
Right now, there are about 5,300 unclaimed economic stimulus checks totaling around $3 million.
There are nearly 1,500 regular refund checks totaling over 1.5 million.
"You need to contact the IRS. The easiest way is to go to www.irs.gov. There are two online tools that you might be able to use. One is called 'Where's My Refund?' The other tool, if you think it's an economic stimulus payment that you're missing, is 'Where's My Economic Stimulus Payment?' That allows you to check on that, but it won't allow you to change your address. So, you will have to call the IRS, write the IRS or come into an IRS office to actually change your address," says Boone.
The average undeliverable stimulus check is $583.
By law, the economic stimulus checks must be sent out by the end of this year.
To avoid future problems, the IRS encourages taxpayers to choose direct deposit.
