The first case of rabies of this year has been confirmed in Houston County.

A fox found on January 25th on State Highway 95 south of Columbia, Ala tested positive for rabies.

According to the health department, a resident found the fox in his yard attacking his dog.

There was no known human contact with the rabid fox and the dog is vaccinated against the rabies virus.

Residents of the area are advised to take the following precautions: ensure pet vaccinations are current, children should not play with wild animals and report stray animals to animal control.

If bitten by a stray, wash wound with soap and water and seek medical attention immediately.

Alabama state law requires all dogs and cats three months or older to be vaccinated against rabies annually.

In 2008, 13 rabid animals were found in Houston County.
