Camp Sugar Falls is a three day program that teaches children how to live independently with the disease. It is designed after Camp Seale Harris in Birmingham.

“They learn how to manage what they eat with their activities, they learn about insulin injections, they learn about new products that are available for them to use,” said Lanora Medley, Chairperson of Camp Sugar Falls.

Trained volunteers provide daily sessions on diabetes education. Kids participate in a variety of activities that give them an opportunity to bond.

Christopher Medley, a camp attendee, says “You get to meet a lot of people that share the disease with you so it's easier to manage then hanging out with all your friends that eat sugar all the time.”

Kids learn a lot at camp, but it takes money to make it happen. Organizers are hoping for help from the community.

“We are looking for corporate, civic, community and individual sponsors to help make a kids dream come true,” says Lanora.

The valuable information children learn at this camp will help them prepare for life with diabetes.

“I learned a lot about new things like pumps… I learned how to give myself shots in my legs,” said Katie Bowdoin.

“Mom and dad used to do everything for me with my diabetes but now I can just do it myself,” says Medley.

Camp sugar falls will be held on June 22nd through the 24th at Landmark Park.
