A number of us remember having a curfew when we were teens, set by our parents. But now, if a curfew passes in the City of Abbeville, it’s not the parents who will be the first to get onto teenagers.
Mayor Ryan Blalock of the City of Abbeville says, "It's come up several times from the police department, not any serious crimes but just mischief."
Mayor Blalock says city officials have been discussing a curfew for teens 17 and under for the past few months. One of the main reasons is because of the number of absentees in schools.
Mayor Blalock says, "It's an opportunity to try to increase our attendance in school, just in Abbeville high school for instance over the past year they've had over 2000 absences."
The City of Headland already has a curfew in effect for teens, and Mayor Blalock says from what he's heard it worked out quite well.
Mayor Blalock says, "I think it's worked well I think it gave them an opportunity to interact with the youth that are out that late."
But Abbeville Junior Jovana Frazier says the curfew could have a ricochet effect.
Frazier, a student at Abbeville High School, says, "I think it is okay, but it's not going to do a lot for students, if you try to restrain the students sometimes it works out for the worst."
However, others like Abbeville High Principal Dale Barnes thinks it could be a change for the better.
Principal Barnes says, "I understand that a lot of other cities have gone through with it and from what I've heard about it this far it has seemed to help."
Mayor Blalock says more discussion will be held at the next city council meeting in two weeks.
