Houston County commissioners are considering Brownfield Tax Abatement for the planned home of a Publix grocery store.

The developer is applying for the Alabama Department of Environmental Managements Brownfield Tax Abatement policy after finding residual contaminants on the site of Cottonwood Corners.

The city of Dothan is considering a similar proposal.

According to chamber of commerce president Matt Parker, the county would lose less than $2,000 annually in property tax from the abatement but could stand to gain $30,000 annually in school funding.

The commission will vote on this issue at its Monday morning meeting.
