Electronic bingo has been brought up as a revenue cure for Covington County’s cash strapped budget. The commission has made their ruling on whether or not they want electronic bingo in the county.

On the topic of electronic bingo Covington County Commission Chairman Lynn Sasser only had one thing to say, "Electronic bingo as far as Covington County is concerned is a dead issue. It's gone."

The idea of bringing electronic bingo to Covington County began when money started getting tight.

"It started out on the ground floor talking about the revenue of it and we needed the money. Some of the commission thought that we ought to be something we should look at," says Harold Elmore, the District 3 Commissioner.

A number of reasons led to their decision at a specially called meeting Monday.

"The further we got into discussing it and the way its gone work some of us began to back off of it. We just didn't feel like it was the thing to do... moral things... we just didn't think it was the right thing to do," says Elmore.

Questions of legality also arose especially since the Alabama legislature never brought it up for discussion in this past legislative session.

"They didn't want to fool with it... I felt like they didn't want it in here and that's why they never touched it," says Elmore.

Commissioners told News 4 that if the topic of electronic bingo comes up again it will be put to a vote of the people.

"I just think it's too much pressure for one man or three people to decide if we need bingo in Covington County. The whole people ought to have say so in the vote on that," says Elmore.

Commissioners are now discussing other ways to create revenue including the possibility of raising the sales tax.
