What was supposed to be a routine training flight turned into a deadly scene just north of Hartford on Monday.

"At approximately 3:30 today Fort Rucker was notified that one of our TH-67's which is our training helicopter was down with suspected damage and injuries. From that, our flat iron which is the Medivac component at Fort Rucker was dispatched out to the scene,” said Public Affairs Director Lisa Eichorn of Fort Rucker.

"Medivac took one pilot to the medical center with non life threatening injuries; unfortunately we did have one pilot who was pronounced dead at the scene," said Eichorn. Officials say it will be 24 hours before their names are released.

Eichorn says approximately 500 TH-67 helicopters fly out each day however this is not the only time this particular model aircraft has gone down in the Wiregrass.

Almost 4 years ago to the day back on June 23rd, 2005 Enterprise pilot Michael Lee died in a TH-67 flight that went down near a recreation center in Eufaula.

On July 16, 2007 a TH-67 chopper crashed at the same location as Monday’s accident. Fifty-two-year-old pilot Steve Ferguson and student pilot 23-year-old Second Lieutenant Michael Connelly survived the crash.

But for now, Fort Rucker is mourning the loss of one of their own.

"Fort Rucker's thoughts and prayers go out to the family members. This is one of our own, these pilots whether they are civilian military, they are part of the Fort Rucker family and we feel for this family," said Eichorn.

Fort Rucker’s Combat Readiness Center Team was sent out to investigate Monday's crash sight.
