Monday afternoon's helicopter crash had first responders from across Geneva County running to the rescue. Many of these departments say it is nothing usual to send aid to help one another.

When the Hartford Fire and Rescue got the call Monday afternoon, there were reports a helicopter crashed into a vehicle.

Hartford Fire Chief Andy Hovey said without mutual aid it would have been nearly impossible to handle.

"Most of the time we don't have the resources to cover any mass casualty and that's what it had potential to be. If it had struck another vehicle and had 3 or 4 people in the helicopter too and 4 people in the car we would have been overwhelmed," says Chief Hovey.

Fortunately another vehicle was not involved.

Geneva County Sheriff Greg Ward says he knows the importance of mutual aid in that area.

"It's very important especially for Geneva County... it's a rural county. We got eight deputies. It just helps fill in where you don't have the personnel that you really need to do the job we have to do," says Sheriff Ward.

"We pretty much have to band together on anything on any significant size," says Hovey.

Fort Rucker is no different. They required the help of law enforcement to secure the area before arriving on the scene.

But assistance goes both ways.

"This is the second time we've covered a helicopter crash from Fort Rucker and they came to our assistance also on hazmat calls and some other things so it's always nice to have someone like Fort Rucker and Dothan close by," says Hovey.

"Law enforcement in the county, we're here to help each other and when the call goes out they respond, same with the military," says Ward.

Among those who responded were Alabama state troopers, Fort Rucker, Geneva County Sheriff's Office, Geneva police, Geneva rescue squad, Hartford Fire and Rescue and Hartford police.
