Shawonda Russal and her family keep to themselves on College Road in Ozark. But Wednesday morning it was far from quiet.

"About an hour ago when the police came through they were all out here in the fields and stuff and looking," said Russal.

What they are looking for is the weapon used in Wednesday morning's shooting involving an officer.

Ozark Police Chief Tony Spivey says at 12:27 am one of his officers stopped to get information from a young man that is when things turned serious.

"The officer just stopped to identify him and of course on Andrew Avenue. We’ve had some business burglaries in that area in prior times the officer was just going to identify him and find out what he was doing in the area," said Chief Spivey.

Authorities say 19-year-old Bryan Bowman became combative when the officer questioned him and began a struggle with the officer.

Chief Spivey said, "When he produced the handgun from the waistband and firing at the officer so the first shot was basically really close."

Three to five rounds were shot at the officer, one hitting the windshield of his car. Because of the location the officer made the decision to not fire back.

"The officer was aware of the surroundings and the suspect was running towards the home that was occupied and he made the decision not to shoot at the suspect."

About 30 minutes later, Bowman was spotted around Briarhill Court where he was arrested. Even though no one was injured in this incident, Chief Spivey says this time of crime, is on the rise.

"We've seen an increase in officers assaulted over the past several years but we're seeing more with incidents like this."

Chief Spivey says quick thinking and training helped keep the officer and possibly residents’ safe during the shooting.

The officer on duty received minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Bowman is in the Dale County Jail with no bond. He is being charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.
