Road work on highways heading out of Enterprise's Boll Weevil Circle is wrapping up but new projects are coming soon.
If you've traveled Highway 167 South recently between Enterprise and Geneva County you've probably noticed a line of one way traffic as drivers wait to pass. But construction is nearly complete.
Workers were out Thursday putting on finishing touches.
"We were very fortunate working with ALDOT because of decaying of the asphalt they came in a milled and resurfaced from the bypass to the Geneva line," says Enterprise Mayor Kenneth Boswell.
On Highway 27 resurfacing from the Boll Weevil Circle to the Country Club is complete. The second phase will begin soon including repaving to the city limits.
Both projects on Highway167 South and Highway 27 North were paid for by the state.
Work on Highway 84 West from Enterprise to New Brockton was slated to be completed with stimulus money but it's been postponed.
"Some of the environmentalist has not been finished,” says Boswell, “You have a limited amount of time to spend stimulus money, and so that project's been postponed.”
The city now wants to repave Rucker Boulevard from Reynolds Street all the way to the Fort Rucker gate.
"Absolutely excited we had approximately 1/3 of Rucker Boulevard resurfaced last year. With the news coming that the rest of it will be done to the gate is music to our ears its so heavily traveled. It supports Fort Rucker and industry to Fort Rucker,” says Boswell.
That project is being funded 100% by stimulus money.
They will start taking bids in late August and you can expect work to begin within 30-45 days after that.
A traffic light is also going up at the intersection of Fort Rucker Boulevard and freedom drive.
"I personally think it's a good idea because I've personally seen a number of serious wrecks out here and it's needed," says Richard Bray, the owner of AAA Storage across the street from the intersection.
Accidents often happen because drivers can't see past a hill as they turn into a 45 mph speed zone.
Funding for that project is a partnership between Enterprise, Coffee County and the state.
The state pays half, Coffee County contributed $20,000 and Enterprise will pay the remaining share.
There are a number of other road projects the city of enterprise is petitioning for projects inside the Boll Weevil Circle.
They are working with the department of transportation to possibly repave east Lee Street. They are also hoping for a turn lane on Highway 167 South at Oak Ridge.
Boswell says, phase one of widening projects on Highway 167 North will start in 2010 from the Boll Weevil Circle to the health department.
“You better know we're going to be asking for it, we are asking for it and we will continue to ask for it,” says Boswell.
The city has also asked for $2 million in federal funding repair smaller roads inside the city.
Mayor Boswell expressed his deep gratitude toward the governor and individuals at the Alabama Department of Transportation for all their help with these projects.
“They consider our need and do everything they can on a daily basis to help us,” says Boswell.
