Three trials, three guilty verdicts; Andrevis Davis, Kiara Watson, and now Teona Sterling have all been found guilty by jurors of different levels of involvement from one March morning in 2008.
Officers Walter Handley and Aurthur Schaffer were shot that night by Andrevis Davis who was sentenced to 900 years as the shooter. Kiara Watson and Teona Sterling were outside in what the prosecution called the getaway car.
"Not only was she aiding him after by disposing of evidence, she placed a phone call to him to notify him that the police were driving up," said Assistant District Attorney Gary Maxwell.
Prosecutors say that phone call, is a part of the reason the case was probably stronger against sterling than Watson, considering the relationship between sterling and the shooter Andrevis Davis.
Sterlings family says that relationship was an abusive one and Teona was there that night against her will.
Angela Spann, Sterling's mother, said “I've just known of abuse from the guys that she's dated...it's been a history of abuse from guys like this"
Even after the testimony of a psychiatrist jurors felt Sterlings involvement made her guilty of robbery, two counts of attempted murder and another three counts of first degree robbery.
"I didn't see any possible thing but to find her guilty of everything," said Maxwell
About an hour before the jury made the final decision, they came into the courtroom requesting an explanation of aiding and abetting, and apparently what they heard was what they needed for a guilty verdict
Maximum punishment for Class A felonies is 99 years in prison so with 6-counts sterling could see an almost 600-year sentence.
