The program is made possible a $1.5 million grant from the Alabama Dual Party Relay Board.

These students are participating in a one of a kind program offered by Troy University.

Director of Troy's Interpreter Training Program Lynne Wiesman said, "I’ve been here a little over three months and we've gone from 22 majors to over 100 so it's phenomenal."

The interpreter training program has only been a minor until the fall of this year. Now Troy has partnered with the Alabama Dual Party Relay Board to bring students a four-year interpreter degree.

Dean for the College of Education Lance Tatum said, “Having a full blown major in interpreting provides the opportunity for us to provide more course development for the state of Alabama, helping give students a viable career and gainful employment within the state and nationally."

The program will include a state of the art language learning lab paid for by the state grant.

Dean Tatum said, "We have signed a five-year agreement with them. It's a $300,000 a year grant that will total $1.5 million."

Interest in the program continues to grow as demand throughout the state continues to rise.

Troy University Chancellor Jack Hawkins said, "It's desperately needed. There are 40,000 hearing impaired in the state and only 204 licensed interpreters. That's far too few so Troy University wants to serve the public and we think this is a special way to do that."

The interpreter training program offered inside this building is the only one of its kind in the state. For that reason Troy official say it's only going to continue to grow.

You do have to have a license permit from the state to be a interpreter, in addition to having a degree from Troy.
