The Coffee County EMA is submitting their hazard mitigation plan to the state Friday.
The plan includes local governments' wish lists for projects that would reduce damage from future disasters.
Projects that would reduce loss from future disasters could be eligible for FEMA grant money in the future.
Below are some of those projects in Coffee County making the list.
“All the schools in the county are in the plan for upgrades to the structural soundness of the school for shelter resistance,” says Larry Walker, the Coffee County EMA Deputy Director.
Emergency generators top County Engineer Randy Tindall's list.
He wants to make sure the county shop, the engineer’s office, and the landfill stay up and running and that you can get to those emergency centers
“The county engineer has a lot of county roads that wash out when it rains. They want to put larger culverts in larger drains in these low lying areas,” says Walker.
The City of Enterprise lists a few drainage problems of its own and a need for repairs to City Hall.
New Brockton needs generators to power a number of public service and upgrades to their waste water treatment plant.
The City of Elba would like emergency generators to go in City Hall, the city shop, pumps and shelters.
They're also looking at a number of ways to help flooding problems across the city.
The Town Clerk in Kinston lists drainage problems in downtown and powering the water supply as a top priority.
“Unfortunately our current one water well would not be able to handle all our 800+ water customers that we have so our number one new project would be to have a new water well,” says Paula Katauskas, the Kinston Town Clerk.
The Coffee County EMA should find out if the plans are approved by the State and Federal EMAs by the end of the year.
The Coffee County EMA held 3 public meetings and gave out comment forms for public input into the plan.
They had minimal response from the public.
