Country music star Billy Dean is among 16 musicians on Dothan’s 21st mural. He says its one wall he's proud to be on.

Dean jokes, "Better this wall than the one in the post office."

The Quincy, Florida, native was one of many country musicians in downtown Dothan on Wednesday afternoon; all there to celebrate more than just a painting.

Dean says, "To be just opposite of the other wall of Ray Charles, because you know, I grew up in this area around the 60's when the racial divide was really wide and it was always music for us that brought us all together, all the different races, all the different styles of music, there were just no racial lines when it came to music."

The collaboration of music and artwork is also painting the city green, bringing in revenue for the area.

Don Fabiani, Chairman of the Wiregrass Festival of Murals, says, "We love to see those tour buses come in because every time the tour bus comes in here and spends the night they average spending over $5,000 while they're here, because that's $5,000 that are in the economy every day because they come."

Bringing more people to the Wiregrass has been one of Don Fabiani's primary goals.

As chairman of the Wiregrass Festival of Murals, he says, he thought the paintings were a key to bringing life back to the city.

Fabiani says, "It's particularly good for the downtown area. It's giving people a reason to come back downtown, new shops, new restaurants, that sort of thing."

It's that sort of thing residents hope to see more of for future generations to enjoy.

Fabiani says each new mural translates into more people visiting our area.

Not only that, but it's giving the young and young at-heart a history lesson on all those who are honored on downtown building walls.

Officials say they plan to expand the mural around the United Way building, adding more musicians from all genres.
