(NEWTON, ALABAMA)—Senator Harri Anne Smith (R-Slocomb) today presented a community service grant check for four schools--Newton Elementary, Midland City Elementary, Southdale Middle School and Dale County High School-- to be used for classroom supplies.

Senator Smith and Representative Steve Clouse (R-Ozark) handed the check in the amount of $5,000 over to Dale County school officials at Newton Elementary School Thursday afternoon.

The group included Superintendent Donny Bynum, School Board members Bill McSween and Don Williams as well as principals Michael Teal, Phillip Parker, Barbara Smith and Leavy Boutwell.

“Helping schools is one of the highlights of being a state senator. In these tough times, we must do all we can to keep schools adequately funded,” Senator Smith said. “The future of our communities and state are in the hands of today’s young people, and we must give them the tools they need to succeed,” she added.

Muriel Glenn, a resident of Newton and an advocate for Dale County schools, was on hand for the check presentation. “We’re grateful to Harri Anne for this grant to help teachers purchase much-needed classroom supplies,” Mr. Glenn said. “Harri Anne has always made education a high priority,” he went on to say.

Senator Harri Anne Smith represents District 29 in the Alabama Senate, which encompasses all of Geneva and part of Houston and Dale Counties. She and her husband Charlie live in Slocomb.
