Law enforcement officials spotted a suspect trying to break into a safe at the food giant in Abbeville around 11:45 p.m. on Saturday, but the suspect escaped.

Officials spotted the suspect inside the food giant, but somehow he was able to escape onto the roof and flea the scene before being apprehended.

Chad Sowell said, “The Abbeville 9-1-1 Center received a call reporting a robbery at Subway. We had an officer sitting in the parking lot of the Food Giant when we received the call and he went to the Subway. On the way to the Subway, the alarm company said there was then a burglary at the Food Giant."

Officers rushed to the Food Giant, shined a flashlight through the front door and spotted the suspect.

Sowell said, “When the suspect made contact with the officer he jumped over the counter and exited through the air vent. He then climbed on the roof and jumped into a tree where he scaled down and then went on foot into the wood line."

That's when officers requested backup.

Sowell said, "Officers called in Ventris Prison to get the canines to track the suspect for a couple of hours eventually losing the scent."

Investigators have received several leads, but so far no arrests have been made.

Investigators do believe the man who called in the Subway robbery is the same man who was burglarizing the Food Giant.

There was no car spotted at the scene, no witnesses were around to provide statements.

All officials know at this time is that it was a white male wearing dark clothing.
