Yesterday, Wiregrass-area health departments began giving the H1N1 vaccine for the first time. But even after the long wait for the drug. People did not rush to get the vaccine. As a result a substantial amount of doses are left.

The Houston County Health Department shut today's clinic down at 4 p.m., and there are still a few hundred doses left for the public.

The nurse manager there says she really wants to encourage pregnant women to visit the health department tomorrow again from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to get vaccinated.

On day two of the Houston County Health Department's H1N1clinic, more patients decided to drop everything and roll their sleeves up.

"1st thing this morning, we did have a lot of parents come in with their children and then emergency responders, police and paramedics. Three or four would come in at a time."

ADPH workers thought all 11 hundred doses were going to be used day one but that just wasn't the case.

"We did expect all the vaccine to go yesterday, but I understand there is some fear involved. The phone calls I have gotten, people have expressed fear of the H1N1. It is unknown and I try to explain to them that it’s made just like seasonal flu. There are the same side effects- sore arm, a small fever, but they have gotten a lot of misinformation." Says Sandra Sanders, Nurse Manager of The Houston County Health Dept.

Local doctors also recommend the shot because it is manufactured the same way seasonal flu is.

Dothan OBGYN is waiting to receive the shipment of vaccine they ordered.

"I do recommend it for my pregnant patients and I hope that the message is getting out there. Whether they choose to get it or not- that will be their own decision, but at least they know it is available and they should consider getting it," Thomas W.C. Robinson, M.D., Dothan OBGYN Inc.

For now, health care officials strongly advise the priority group be vaccinated first but if those people aren't lining up at the door after fair warning, those who want it can get it.

"We are trying to get the target group, however if someone else comes in and wants it, I am not going to turn them away," says Nurse Sanders.

There are some area doctor’s offices that have received their first order of vaccine.

Dothan Pediatrics currently has the mist and the shot, so others may be getting their shipment in the near future.

After this first round of vaccine is administered to the public there is no word yet on when the next batch will arrive.
