The next time you need an ambulance, you may be surprised who shows up at your door in Jackson County.

That's because Jackson Hospital is using not one, but two ambulance services: the county and Dothan ambulance services in Alabama.

Jackson County Fire Chief Tony Wesley says the hospital did not notify them or the county commission about it.

"There were some county employees that were basically questioning us about why we weren't doing the transfers anymore out of the hospital and we were under the impression that we are," said Wesley.

Commissioners looked into the problem and realized it was legal for the hospital to contract with Dothan ambulance services.

That was taking revenue basically from what Jackson County Fire Rescue had been getting in order to get some of the proceeds back from what the county's already funding for the service.

The county sat down and discussed the issue with hospital officials.

"I can't speak for the hospital,” said Ted Lakey, county administrator, “but they've given me assurances at a meeting we had with the hospital director that Jackson County would be the first one called."

But the problem hasn't gone away yet.

The main complaints against the county's service were rates and level of service.

Wesley says they offer competitive rates.

"We basically probably just base a little over break even, we're just not in it for profit."

He believes their quality of service is much higher with their training and equipment.

Dothan ambulance service says Jackson Hospital approached them and they did not mean to overstep any boundaries.

However, DAS does believe they are qualified to serve Jackson County's residents.

Despite the differences, all parties agree the problem can be fixed.
