Superintendent of Dothan City Schools, Dr. Sam Nichols brought up the idea of mandatory school uniforms for discussion at a special school board meeting Monday.

Dothan city schools are discussing the idea of forming a task force to study school uniforms.

"We're not going to do this next school year. We'll put together a task force to study the possibility of doing this I hope to have a recommendation back to the board in November or Decemeber," said Dr. Nichols.

The first item the board will vote on is whether to form the task force to study student uniform policy that vote will take place on July 21st.

Talk about a future policy Monday turned to enforcement of the current dress code.

Troy city schools are the most recent in the area to adapt uniforms.

Chairman of the Dothan City School Board, Steve Stokes favors the change..he says it can go hand in hand with better behavior and academic performance.

"When I was in the military, in the Marine Corps our policy was 'if you look sharp you typically act sharp' and that's what we expect with high standards. I think we should apply that to our school system. We expect them to be sharp, want them to act well perform academically and them to be real asset when they go to the workforce," said Stokes.

The board will vote on forming a task force to study school uniforms at July 21st meeting.

I think that school uniforms won't change anything. If anything it'll make them resent the idea of even going to school if they have to wear something they don't want to. I on both sides of the fence right now though because some of the clothes are very inappropriate. I read somewhere where someone said that they won't be able to bust a sag in khakis but the truth of the matter is they will take the uniform and turn it into something else. Uniforms will only make the drop out rate higher. Because, they are getting stricter by the year and makes it hard for them to even want to learn. Will it stop violence NO. Will it increase the learning process NO. What is it really going to do to help the kids succeed NOTHING!

School uniforms will take the pressure off of students feeling they need to have expensive name brands to fit in. School uniforms are inexpensive compared to the clothing they wear now. I have been in another county that uniforms are required. Parents save money and no more battles in the mornings about clothing.

The first thing I would like to say is that people who aren't affected by this in anyway possible should leave their opinions to themselves. However, if you are a parent or a high school student with a valid opinion, feel free. My opnion on uniforms is that they aren't neccesary. Nothview and Dothan high are having trouble keeping up with the normal dress code, so why make it even more difficult? And all that stuff about uniforms making schools safer? Please! Give me a break! Anyone who wanted to get onto a school campus could easily see what the other students are wearing and copy it.

I'm completely against the uniforms. Clothes are not the reason that students are being picked on; other factors are involved. Also, forcing students to wear uniforms will not help them when they get into the real world. Another reason I'm against uniforms is that if students have to wear uniforms, what about the teachers? Would they have to wear uniforms? Besides, there is no actual research showing that uniformed schools have a lowered crime, gang, and violence rate.

i think that it is good that Dr.Nichols is trying to make dothan city schools wear uniforms because it will keep down drama and the students want have to envy each other or be jealous because a girl or a boy have on nice clothes(and they would focus on there work better)thats my true opinion on wearing school uniforms.

I like the idea of school uniforms. It could benefit schools,if the school board will provide a store for the uniform to be sold at; and the proceeds go the to the schools. The board could sell new and resale used ones.

School uniforms are a wonderful idea and the kids will all benefit from this by taking away some of the pressure of name brand clothes.

I do not support school uniforms because there are kids will not be able to purchase the uniforms they need. Some kids barely have clothes to wear now and would be an added stress on how they will purchase the uniforms.

I support having school uniforms for DCS students. Having uniforms allows students to concentrate more on their school work and less on what other students are wearing or what other students think about what they are wearing. The student's economic background does not factor in. Lower, middle, and upper-income students wear the same clothes. It is much easier on the budget and the decision of what to wear to school each day is no longer an issue. The time currently used in determining if a student's attire is in accordance with the current dress code and dealing with those who are not in compliance can be used for classroom instruction. Students should have a choice of different clothing items, i.e. skirts, skorts, shorts, pants, shirt styles, a few color choices, etc. Students wearing uniforms do not look like a bunch of clones in the classroom. They do look neat, and are identified with the sc

what next? same hair color and cuts for students? There is already a dress code, shirts must be tucked in by male and female, etc. Uniforms will cause even more of a drop out rate.

I support the idea. These baggy pants sagging around the butt area so the underwear shows is disgusting and says alot about character.
