Dothan, Ala.—The Wallace Community College Foundation recently established the Charles E. Coggins Leadership Scholarship in honor of the Dothan businessman who served three years as chairman of the Foundation.

Coggins, who retired in 2004 as vice-president of administration and finance of AAA Cooper Transportation, was instrumental in helping raise more than $4 million dollars in the college’s first major gifts campaign in 2006.

The scholarship will pay up to $1100 per semester for a student who demonstrates high ethical standards, responsible citizenship, leadership and service to the community. Preference will be given to students from Houston County.

According to WCC President Linda C. Young, the criteria for the scholarship was intended to mirror Coggins’ strive for excellence and community service. “Charles Coggins is a true leader,” says Young. “He is one of the most generous, hard-working men I have ever known, and it is an honor to recognize him for his service to this college and to this community.”

Coggins is actively involved in a number of civic leadership roles, and his history includes the following memberships and awards: Houston County United Way; Education Foundation for Dothan’s Future, Inc.; Community Foundation of Southeast Alabama; Citizens Supervisory Committee of the City of Dothan, Convention and Visitors Bureau; Alabama-Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Troy State University-Dothan Continuing Education Advisory Council and Advisory Board, Alabama Society of Certified Public Accountants; Chairman, Community Air Service Task Force; Director of Governmental Affairs and past Chair, Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce; Chairman, Dothan by Design; Dothan Economic Development Partnership; Treasurer and Board member, Dothan Area Chamber Foundation; Member and past Treasurer, Houston County Health Care Authority; Board of Directors, Wachovia Bank; Assistant District Governor, District 6880 of Rotary International; past-president, Dothan Rotary Club and Sustaining Member, Rotary Foundation.
